Professor George Ghinea

Professor George Ghinea, from the Department of Computer Science, has recently been awarded an ASEM-DUO travel grant as part of the DUO-India exchange programme. Prof. Ghinea is one of only 50 proposals selected from numerous European academic institutions to collaborate under the SPARC projects initiative.

Together with Indian colleagues from Symbiosis Institute of Technology, Pune, they will be working on a project falling under the broad remit of Responsible AI systems, which aims to help develop more ethical and responsible AI systems. The project will sensitise issues around responsible AI systems using the First Principle whilst also factoring in local cultural practices.

Research discussions will focus on (but will not be limited to): dataset issues, safety decision making processes, and potential human prejudices and biases. The visit will facilitate the understanding with peer groups in developing the algorithms and technical methods that can be employed for helping AI reach ethical decisions which may not necessarily be always accurate.
