Homestart is a charity supporting families in the local community who are coping with isolation, post-natal illness or other mental health problems, disability, multiple births, bereavement, domestic violence, or any parenting or family life struggle. The organisation has a network of trained volunteers and experts visiting matched families in their own homes for 2-3 hours once a week to provide non-judgmental practical and emotional support.
Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:
In this role, you will support those families who may be dealing with a variety of difficulties including; post-natal depression, isolation, physical and mental health problems, bereavement, financial worries, or relationship difficulties. As a Home Visiting Volunteer, you will learn a set of skills such as empathy and compassion, active listening, communication, interpersonal, cultural sensitivity, patience, and tolerance.
Typical duties include:
- Offering support, befriending, and practical help to the family supported
- Drawing your own experience of parenting to encourage parents’ strengths and emotional well-being
- Encouraging families to widen their network of relationships and to use effectively the support and services available in the community
- Keeping a brief report of visits for monitoring purposes
Please note, this organisation requires a minimum 12 months commitment.
