The 11th International Conference on Magnesium Alloys and Their Applications, Mg2018 is now open for conference delegate registration and abstract submission.
The longest running conference dedicated to the development of magnesium alloys for structural and other applications, beginning in 1986 as the 2-day Magnesium Technology conference in London. This was in an era where the main use of magnesium was not as magnesium based alloys, but rather as an additive for steel and aluminium. Since then, this conference has grown in both size and the breadth of topics covered to include primary production, alloy development, deformation and wrought processing, casting, and corrosion to name just few.
Today, the volume of magnesium produced is almost five times that produced in 1986, with the use of magnesium alloys as die castings in automotive and personal electronics applications showing the most growth. The research interest in magnesium alloys continues to rise; not only in the traditional research topics highlighted above, but also as a functional material for applications in biomaterials, and in the novel emerging fields of battery technology and hydrogen storage.
Mg2018 provides a tremendous platform to look at the recent developments and advances in both the established and emerging fields in magnesium, whether to understand fundamental science or applications of magnesium alloys. It is also a great opportunity to reflect on magnesium research to date and what must be done to make magnesium the material of choice in a climate where globalisation, environmental impacts and sustainable manufacturing become more and more important. We aim to bring together researchers from both academia and industry to cover the full breadth of magnesium research, including primary production, fundamentals, new processes and alloy development, exciting new applications, and managing end-of-life recycling.
