Hydraulic Performance of Natural Flood Management Measures

We are recruiting new Doctoral Researchers to our EPSRC funded Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) PhD studentships starting 1 October 2023. Applications are invited for the project Hydraulic Performance of Natural Flood Management Measures

Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend (bursary) of approximately £19,668, including inner London weighting, plus payment of their full-time home tuition fees for a period of 42 months (3.5 years).

You should be eligible for home (UK) tuition fees there are a very limited number (no more than three) of studentships available to overseas applicants, including EU nationals, who meet the academic entry criteria including English Language proficiency.

The Project

Natural Flood Management (NFM) aims to improve traditional flood risk management methods by using natural processes. The PhD researcher will conduct experiments in hydraulic flume facilities at ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥app and field measurements in partnership with a Local Flood Authority and Non-Profit Organization. Numerical modelling will be conducted in collaboration with HR Wallingford. This research will increase understanding of the performance of NFM solutions and will provide practical recommendations for NFM design.

Eligibility

Applicants will have or be expected to receive a first or upper-second class honours degree in an Engineering, Computer Science, Design, Mathematics, Physics or a similar discipline. A Postgraduate Masters degree is not required but may be an advantage.

Skills and Experience

Candidates should be motivated to undertake a PhD, proactive and willing to work in interdisciplinary teams.

A good BSc/BEng (1st or 2:1 class honours degree, or preferably an MSc) in an area of Environmental or Civil Engineering is required. Knowledge in hydraulics and previous laboratory or field experience would be advantageous.

Proficiency in English is required (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, or a BSc/MSc in UK).

You should be highly motivated, able to work independently as well as in a team, collaborate with others and have good communication skills.

Meet the Supervisor(s)


Pedro Martin-Moreta - Pedro (CEng, PhD, MEng) is a Lecturer in Flood and Coastal Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥app. He has 15 years of experience in flood risk, flood modelling and river engineering, both as a consultant and researcher. His principal research interests are flood hydraulics, flood defences and numerical modelling in rivers.
