The Division of Social Work was delighted to host Dr Mariya Ali, former Deputy Minister of Health and Family in the Maldives as our key-notes speaker, at this year’s Wise Choices Careers Day.
Mariya’s father was imprisoned in the Maldives while she was seven years old because of his political affiliation. Almost 20 years later, her professional career in social work led her to become the deputy minister holding the portfolio of gender, domestic violence, child protection, mental health and services for the elderly in the Maldives. On top of her social work qualifications, Mariya completed an MA in International Child Welfare and a PhD in the area of children’s human rights which is her area of particular interest. Mariya had a long career working for a variety of international organisations including UNICEF, Save the Children and is the recent co-founder of the Butterfly Effect.
You can listen to Mariya’s talk describing her journey .
