EU flags in Brussels(1)

Brunel University's Reader in Education & Youth Studies, Dr Pam Alldred was an invited attendee at the high-level  ‘Ending Violence Against Women – Taking Stock And Next Steps’ event in Brussels, Belgium. She was able to feed into the review from her experience of running the GAP Work and the projects at Brunel University.

The European Union has gradually strengthened its policy and legal response and has helped raise awareness about this serious problem across Europe.  2017 was designated the ‘Year of focused actions to combat violence against women’, led by the European Commission's which run until the end of 2018. Brunel’s USVreact project was featured in this campaign.

This is an excellent moment to look back on what has been achieved over the past 20 years, through the 800 projects to combat violence against women, children and minorities, and to support victims through the DAPHNE Programme.  Senior delegates from the Council of Europe, OECD, World Bank, as well as from DAPHNE projects were hosted by the Gender Equalities Unit and discussed priorities for the years ahead.
