Research Interests
Gareth’s current research focuses on the growth paradigm, and the political economy of the environment, particularly technology fetishism and climate change. His previous interests include the life and work of Karl Polanyi, Otto Neurath, the history of East Germany, the political economy of Eastern Europe, social movement theory, and international migration.

Project details
In 2013-14 Gareth was awarded a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship as well as grants from the Daiwa Foundation and (as Co-investigator) from the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research, in connection with his research on ‘green growth’ and the ‘growth paradigm.’ The project resulted in a Tokyo conference on ‘Green Growth and Global Environmental Change,’ and a conference volume, published by Zed Books. He has previously won small grants from, among others, the British Academy, the Lippman-Miliband Trust, the Amiel-Melburn Trust, the Nuffield Foundation, and the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst, as well as a full doctoral training award and an overseas fieldwork award from the ESRC.
