Aims and activities
Programme aims
The aims of the Young Scholars Programe are to support children to:
- Develop intellectual confidence, raise aspirations, consider future career options and participation in Higher Education (HE)
- Enable identification of special abilities and talents of children, which in turn will enhance their self-esteem and confidence
- Enhance the learning power of children by providing stimulating activities
- Promote greater wellbeing of children which is strongly linked with increased achievement
- Build cultural capital which is necessary for future success.
Intervention materials include the following elements:
- Aspirations – introduce to career choices and possibilities
- Talent search – focusing on multiple talents and passions
- Communication skills
- Provide reading materials with a range of texts and interactive activities
- Curiosity and creativity
- Mathematics ‘learning together with parents’ – some parents may not be able to help their children with maths. Around half of working-age adults have the numeracy level of a primary school child according to the charity National Numeracy.
- Provision of knowledge of research and key aspects of wellbeing
- Character building – resilience, grit, effort development of self-esteem
- Early planning for university
Activities 2020-2021
The Young Scholars Programme supports schools through a range of activities, talks and publications, also contributing to the professional knowledge of teachers, capacity building and local community engagement.
- A total of 1430 children were supported by providing readings and guidance materials based on the Triangle of success model which included 30 case studies of children
- Following our workshops on problem-solving in mathematics for parents and children, many parents enrolled for maths courses for themselves.
