One area of particular emphasis for the Young Scholars Programme is mathematics education. Many parents are concerned about their inability to help their children with mathematics. There is much evidence that completing maths homework increases stress levels in the family. According to the charity National Numeracy, nationally around half of working-age adults have the numeracy level of a primary school child.
Our new intervention provides guidance on mathematical concepts, practice sheets, problem solving, challenging maths puzzles and assessment to raise mathematics knowledge and confidence amongst parents and children. The Young Scholars Programme encourages parents and children to learn together. We are launching the first phase of this programme with children at two schools and intend to use it as a springboard for further mathematics support for children and parents.
